Swami Chinmayananda
1916–1993
Swami Chinmayananda (1916–1993) was born Balakrishna Menon in Kerala, India. After completing his studies in English literature and law at Lucknow University, he began his career in journalism, writing for The National Herald. In the late 1940s, his spiritual quest led him to study under Swami Sivananda and Swami Tapovanam in the Himalayas, where he was initiated into the monastic order and given the name Chinmayananda. He went on to become one of the most prominent teachers of Advaita Vedanta, founding the Chinmaya Mission in 1953 to spread the teachings of the Upanishads and Bhagavad Gita worldwide.
Swami Chinmayananda's literary and spiritual contributions have had a lasting impact on modern Hindu thought. He is best known for his accessible commentaries and interpretations of ancient scriptures, making Vedanta philosophy relevant to contemporary audiences. His major works include 'The Holy Geeta' (1969), which is featured on this site—a comprehensive English commentary on the Bhagavad Gita. Through this work and others, he demystified complex spiritual concepts, emphasizing practical wisdom for daily life. His legacy endures through the global network of Chinmaya Mission centers, educational initiatives, and a vast body of writings that continue to inspire seekers around the world.
