Satyajit Ray

Satyajit Ray (1921–1992) was an influential Indian filmmaker, writer, and illustrator, born in Calcutta (now Kolkata), West Bengal. He was educated at Presidency College and later at Visva-Bharati University in Santiniketan. Ray began his professional life as a commercial artist before moving into filmmaking, where he achieved international acclaim with films such as 'Pather Panchali.' Alongside his cinematic career, Ray made significant contributions to Bengali literature, particularly in the genre of detective and science fiction. His multifaceted talents extended to illustration, music composition, and magazine editing, making him a towering figure in twentieth-century Indian culture.

Ray's literary legacy is especially celebrated for his creation of Feluda, the astute Bengali private investigator featured in 'The Complete Adventures of Feluda (ফেলুদা সমগ্র, 1965).' Across 31 stories, Ray captivated readers with intricate mysteries, sharp dialogue, and evocative depictions of Indian and international locales. The Feluda stories, originally serialized in Bengali magazines, are renowned for their cerebral puzzles and the dynamic interplay between Feluda, his cousin Topshe, and the comic writer Jatayu. Ray's deft blending of intellectual challenge, travelogue, and humor has ensured the enduring popularity of Feluda, securing Ray's place as a foundational figure in modern Indian detective fiction.
